Anna Verwaal, RN, CLE, is a Maternal-Child Health Nurse, Birth Consultant, Labor Doula and UCLA Certified Lactation Educator. In 1984 she received her nursing degree in Holland where she was born and raised. Anna has lived and worked as a nurse in cultures as diverse as Israel, Norway, Croatia, Thailand and Saudi Arabia. In 1990 she came to Los Angeles and worked for many years as a labor and delivery, post-partum and newborn nursery nurse. She also worked for several years as a Maternal-Child health nurse for a home health agency doing mother-baby follow up visits as well as teaching birth and post-partum doula workshops.
Currently, Anna has a birth consulting, labor- doula service, educating and encouraging couples to make informed decisions with regards to their birth options and choices. Topics include how parenting begins before conception, the awareness of the baby before, during and after birth and how important it is to find the right health care provider (medical doctor or midwife) and location (hospital or home) to prepare for a natural childbirth. She prepares and empowers women to give birth naturally instead of “being delivered” and ads not only a calm presence, coming from many years of experience, but also a spiritual component to the birth.
Her services include counseling couples that experienced a traumatic experience during the birth of their previous baby or had a traumatic birth coming into the world them-selves as well as supporting couples that are facing fertility challenges.
She also photographs the journey of parents-to-be going through labor and birth.
Anna is available and frequently asked to teach, lecture or give workshops about consciously conceiving, birth, bonding, adoption and breastfeeding and is currently working on a photo-book of what the intimacy of giving birth looks like so that the power of childbirth returns to its rightful place.
